Still an enduser after all these years
If you count the GENIAC as a datapoint, I've been involved with personal computing for over 50 years.

Truth is though, as a not-quite-10-year-old, it was more about getting the lights to light on a weird contraption made out of chunks of masonite and paper fasteners than it was about "computing". From my perspective, I still see myself as a tinkerer - my job has always been to make things work; this means that I've always been dependent on the people who make the things that I have had to make work.

I think that in many ways, my involvement with vintage computing reflects that relationship - it's given me a chance to get to know more about the equipment that I've loved/hated for so many years. I've also become interested in learning more about the people who made that equipment, and how and why they made the decisions that often affected me directly as a consumer of their products.

The end result is that my collecting focus is on personal computing in the early seventies, partly because that's when I really got started using computers as tools and partly because that was a time when (micro)computers could still be conceived, designed and taken to production by individuals.
